Érase una vez el sultán de un lejano país oriental a quien le quedaban dos deseos por pedir a un genio. Animado por su hija Amina y la melancolía de la solitaria vida de palacio, el monarca decide convocar al mago para pedirle algo tan sencillo como un contrincante al shatranj, antiguo juego de mesa parecido al ajedrez. Ambos quedan asombrados cuando, en lugar del genio, aparece Ayu, su hija, que se ofrece para cumplir el deseo. Eso sí, la pequeña genia es muy joven aún y no parece controlar mucho ni de shatranj, ni de magia Las dos niñas y su amigo Ahmed tendrán que viajar muy lejos para recuperar las meteduras de pata de Ayu, inexperta aprendiz de genia.
